Dog Sports - Tracking

Any dog can learn to follow a scent trail and (eventually) compete in tracking. In tracking (sometimes call man-trailing), the dog is trained to follow a scent trail to find an scented article (such as a glove or wallet) or a person. Dogs who are independent and enjoy making decisions are ideally suited, but many dogs love this sport. Tracking requires a high degree of obedience but it's not the same thing as obedience. The dog is much more independent in its work, and there are fewer restrictions on where or when it can sniff. The bond between tracking dog and handler is very strong since the dog must have absolute trust in his handler to be allowed to use his nose instead of coming back for direction from the handler. Tracking dogs can be trained to find lost people, but as a sport, a track for the dog to follow is generally laid down by a volunteer.
